Architect education

Becoming an architect typically requires a professional degree in architecture, which is a graduate program that typically takes five years to complete. Before being admitted to a professional architecture program, however, you will usually need to have completed a pre-professional undergraduate degree in a related field, such as engineering, environmental design, or a physical science.

The curriculum of an architecture program generally includes courses in design, building technology, history, theory, and professional practice. In addition to taking classes, students in architecture programs typically complete several hands-on design projects and may participate in internships to gain real-world experience.

After completing a professional architecture program, graduates must then go through a period of practical training, or apprenticeship, known as the Intern Development Program (IDP). This typically takes about three years to complete and is overseen by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB). Once the IDP is completed, aspiring architects must pass the Architect Registration Examination (ARE) to be able to become a licensed architect.

It is important to note that in addition to the education and experience, to become a licensed architect also require having a specific number of years of practical experience under a licensed architect. The number of years of practical experience required may vary depending on the jurisdiction and the specific route you take.

All in all, the process of becoming an architect can take several years of education and training, but it is a fulfilling and rewarding career that allows you to design and shape the built environment around us.
