To be an architect, one should possess a combination of technical, creative, and communication skills. Some of the key skills that are important for an architect to have include:
- Strong design skills: Architects are responsible for creating designs for buildings and structures that are both functional and visually appealing. They must have a good sense of aesthetics and an eye for detail.
- Technical expertise: Architects need to have a good understanding of building codes and regulations, construction materials and methods, and structural and mechanical systems. They must also be able to create detailed drawings and plans that can be used by builders and contractors to construct their designs.
- Project management skills: Architects are responsible for overseeing the construction of buildings and structures, which means they must be able to effectively manage and coordinate the work of multiple people and teams.
- Problem-solving skills: Architects must be able to solve complex design problems and make decisions that balance the needs and wants of clients with the constraints of the project, such as budget and zoning regulations
- Communication skills: Architects must be able to effectively communicate with clients, engineers, contractors, and other stakeholders throughout the design and construction process. They must be able to present their designs and explain their decisions in a clear and compelling way.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skill, ability to think abstractly
- Knowledge in computer-aided design(CAD) and Building information modeling (BIM)
- Continuous learning attitude, keep abreast of new regulations, technologies and material developments in the field of architecture.
Keep in mind that these are general skills, many countries have different regulations and requirements for becoming an architect, and typically require a professional degree and a period of supervised work experience to be licensed to practice architecture.
